Prisons Won't Be Fixed Overnight, Government Official States, while Police Search For Two Men Incorrectly Released
Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has labeled the circumstances as a "complete and utter shambles," speaking this morning.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he pointed to remarks made by the justice minister following a previous inmate discharge, saying that the minister would establish stricter checks.
"It took almost a week for the prison service reportedly to realize this occurred" and notify the authorities, the shadow official says, "leaving them a week behind in the search to find him."
The opposition figure criticises Lammy's performance during recent PMQs and alleges him of a "complete failure in responsibility."
Speaking about incorrect inmate discharges in broader terms, the spokesperson emphasizes that "each mistaken release [...] is unforgivable."
He acknowledges there were similar incidents under the former Conservative government, but says the number "has risen significantly" under the current government.
Advocating more prisons to be constructed, he adds: "What the British people want to see now are proper safeguards implemented."
"That is a particular administrative failure by the Ministry of Justice supervised by David Lammy," the opposition member concludes.
